Carl Dix: This is the 16th annual National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation. We formed this group [October 22nd Coalition] because there was an epidemic of police brutality and police murder that needed to be resisted on a nationwide level. And that brutality, that repression, that criminalization, has not only continued, it has intensified.

CHRISTIAN FASCIST RALLY THIS SATURDAY

If you haven't heard already, Texas Governor, and likely presidential candidate, Rick Perry is actively organizing, via an official proclamation from his political office, a "Day of Prayer and Fasting for Our Nation". It will be at the Reliant stadium this Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 am to 6 pm.

THIS IS A SERIOUS MOVE TOWARD A THEOCRACY

Citing the book of Joel, which by the way, calls on Christians to "beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears" (chapter 3, verse 10), Perry calls on the faithful to pray and fast to seek forgiveness for their "moral decline". And he says that "even those who have been granted power by the people must turn to God..."

Calling this "The Response", he has assembled a wide range of Christian fundamentalist leaders from nutcases like Mike Bickle, the founder and executive director of the International House of Prayer, who targeted Oprah Winfrey, as "a precursor to the anti-Christ", to more mainstream pastors like Ed Young, of Houston's Second Baptist Church.

The main sponsor and "host" of this call for people to "get down on their knees" is the American Family Association. Its head bigot, Bryan Fischer, is waging a holy war on gay marriage and homosexuals in general, outraging the world by claiming, among other numerous fascist inventions, that Hitler's stormtroopers were made up exclusively of male homosexuals, because, unlike heterosexuals, they "had no limits on the savagery and brutality they were willing to inflict".

Seriously folks, this is no joke. "The Bible Taken Literally is a Horror"

In the FAQ section of the Response website, you can read the "American Family Association's statement of faith", which "The Response" has officially adopted. It states first: "We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God". And that the non-believers, "the lost", are condemned to damnation.

A lot of people either just see the lunacy behind this and write off these crazies. Or some simply aren't paying attention. And now there is talk in the press that since the expected turnout for this fascist pep rally looks to be well below what organizers had hoped, that this just proves how marginal these forces are.

But think about what it means that the governor of one of the largest states in the country, and (possibly the next president!) is basically calling for a Christian theocratic regime. As Bob Avakian has said: "Conservative, my ass! These people are Nazi's!" And who among the Democratic leadership has called this out?! What does this say about what kind of system we are living in?

We say, Fight the Power, and Transform the People for Revolution

THE PROTEST AT RELIANT

These Christian fascists must be opposed and it is a very good thing that many individuals and a number of organizations are doing just that. A coaltion of atheists, freethinkers, gay rights organizations, progressive clergy, feminists and others will be protesting in front of the Reliant Center, starting at 8 am. They have gotten permission from Joe's Crab Shack for protestors park in their lot all day. From the facebook event page:

After the picket, we're going to have a get-together/meet and greet in the patio area at the Joe's Crab Shack down the road from the picket, on 610 just west of Kirby Dr. We're asking folks to go to that to bring 1 or 2 cans of food, for the Houston Food Bank. For all of you'all who hate the direction things are going, and want to be part of resistance to all this, we are calling on you to join this protest. Let's make some noise and be creative! We will be there with banners (the two quotes above), signs, copies of Revolution, the new book, BAsics, from the Talks and Writings of Bob Avakian, and other literature that shows how the way out of all this is revolution...join us in creative ways of getting out a revolutionary message in the midst of this. Call us and/or bring your ideas.

On April 11th there was a major event in Harlem celebrating the release of "BAsics...", that was a source of great inspiration, puncturing the atmosphere and impacting the societal discourse with revolution and envisioning a whole other way the world can be.

It was an evening of music, visual art, poetry and readings including musician Guillermo Brown; Richard Brown, former member Black Panther Party and co-founder of The Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, founded by the SF8; poet and playwright reg e. gaines; Moist Paula Henderson, baritone sax player and composer; jazz musician David Murray; Outernational; Abiodun Oyewole from The Last Poets; Ted Rall, cartoonist and author; excerpts from Tapsloitation; and jazz musicians Matthew Shipp and William Parker.

A visual arts exhibition specially curated for the night included the work of Derrick Adams, Richard Duardo, Skylar Fein, Kyle Goen, Dread Scott, SenOne and others to be announced.

Revolutionary May First 2010
"The Revolution We Need...The Leadership We Have"
MAY DAY in Houston kicked off the night before with a crew at the intersection of Reed and Cullen in Sunnyside. With banners and a bullhorn, drivers enthusiastically responded to May First as the international revolutionary holiday. People grabbed hundreds of copies of the RCP Message and Call, and many more copies of REVOLUTION were distributed than ever before. .

On May Day itself, people joined together on a sound truck through the Montrose area with banners and red flags, drumming, chanting, and agitation.

Marchers at the immigrants rights rally in Gulfton welcomed the revolutionary message, and wanted to know more about this Party and Bob Avakian, and many took up the Red Flag..People also took up lots of stickers and red armbands declaring "We Are ALL Illegal" in the face of the new fascist law in Arizona.

The day was topped off by a celebration at a local taqueria and the watching of a clip from Bob Avakian's classic talk, "Revolution: Why it's necessary, Why it's Possible, What it's all about".

As a Mighty Force for REVOLUTION!
On March 8th, Revolution distributors held a rally in Sunnyside, particpated with others in an event in the evening organized by Creative Women Unite. We also attended a march of 2,000 in San Antonio, distributing the paper to hundreds of people.

Benefit for
Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund
This unique and inspiring event took place on
December 6th, 2009 at The Ensemble Theatre Performance Center
It was hosted by Ray Hill, founder/host of The Prison Show, and
Parnell Herbert, community activist, and playwright of "Angola 3"
The program featured Dramatic Readings of Prisoners' Letters by
Brother Said, James West, Phillip Brent, Sr., Tim'm West,
Jamilah Hoffman, and Alejandro del Fuego
Clyde Young, a member of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA,
spoke of how he became a revolutionary and a
communist through his experiences and study in prison.
The program also featured Conscious Political Hip Hop by Mansa Musa
and Angie Joelle, and closed with a scene from "Angola 3" by Parnell Herbert, performed by Philip Brent, Sr.

Carl Dix Tour: From Buffalo Soldier to Revolutionary Communist
This event took place on November 11, 2009 at Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

October 22nd National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation.
Activities in Houston included a speak-out, together with thousands around the country.

On Thursday, April 30, 2009 this very exciting event took place, in a packed lecture hall at Texas Southern University. There was a lot of "buzz" about this event from many different quarters -- students and faculty at TSU, basic working people in the apartments and housing projects, atheists, and religious people. This was an extremely significant event, and discussion spilled out into the hallways afterward, and at a local cafe. Many expressed a desire for this discussion continue.

A Presentation & Discussion occurred on April 5, 2009, and was followed up with several sessions on key issues.

Re-envisioning Revolution and Communism:
What IS Bob Avakian's New Synthesis?
This presentation followed by discussion took place on July 12, 2008, and was attended by a diverse crowd of people. The text of the presentation, given around the country -- and in Colon, Germany -- is available at www.revcom.us. It was followed up the next day with a session with Raymond Lotta on the first wave of socialist revolutions -- the Soviet Union from 1917-1954, and China from 1949 to 1976.
